There will be a showing of upcoming local director — Anthony Chen’s short films, Ah Ma and G-23 at the Alliance Francaise Theatre this early November.

Not merely doing Anthony a favor but I strongly recommend “G-23″. Anthony sent me DVDs of the short films a few days ago. G-23 was good I should say. It’s very compelling for me. I feel quite drawn into the stories of the “three idiosyncratic city dwellers” as Anthony calls them.

SYNOPSIS

Ah Ma

Ah Ma is lying in the hospital, her life hanging by a thread. Her family gathers by her deathbed to send her off. Overwhelmed by sadness, they struggle to find their own way of coming to terms with the impending end.

G-23 is a story about emotional suppression in urban Singapore. It revolves around three idiosyncratic city dwellers, a young Indian girl who has problems coming to terms with her culture’s hot and spicy fare, an elderly man who has lost all purpose in life and a middle-aged lady who is deprived of sex and love. The lives of these characters intertwine through a ticket-tearer working at the local Indian cinema who develops an interest in the lives of his cinema patrons.

About Anthony Chen

Anthony Chen was born in Singapore in 1984. He has worked as a radio presenter, a freelance film reviewer and has acted for the stage and screen. G-23, his graduation film, screened at over 30 international film festivals, notably the Tous les Cinémas du Monde sidebar at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. It also won awards in Belgium, France, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.
