Merry Christmas To Me With Prada!

23rd December 2007 in Design, General, 2 comments  Share This

I have been contemplating on which phone I should get to replace my dreaded pink Motorola L6 mobile phone. The two phones on my list was of course the popular Apple iPhone and the LG Prada (KE850) phone. Both have touch interfaces as I have developed a love for non-conventional user interfaces.

In the end I succumbed to the allure of the Prada and gave one to myself as a Christmas present. I have to say that the only exposure to the LG Prada I had was on Design Sojourn’s blog and Engadget. There is so little news of the Prada phone compared to the loud hype of the iPhone. Maybe it was the mysterious silence of the Prada that attracted me.

LG Prada

Look how beautiful it is. I have a weakness for things that are black, white and have straight lines. The best thing about it is how minimal the phone and its interface is (note the use of ‘is’ instead of ‘are’). The white on black interface presents to one the core essence of the information presented, without the distraction of colors, which would otherwise appear cheap. Although I am a big fan of Apple (I have an iPod, a MacBook and I’m planning to buy a Mac Pro soon) and knowing the iPhone has Safari, OS X, iPod and probably fifty times more features than the Prada, I still chose the latter, because to me a mobile phone is more than a piece of electronic gadgetry. A mobile phone is a communication tool you bring with you almost everywhere you go. It is the next most personal item after your wallet or purse. Therefore it should be you, it should be philosophy.

The LG Prada has also won 2 of the most prestigious design awards including the Red Dot Product Design 2007 Best of the Best and International Forum Design Product Design Award for 2007.

Hey Daphne, Gorgeous is an understatement! I got the phone at a AMK Hub 2nd level. Starhub itself don’t sell this phone anymore. Of the 5-6 places I searched in AMK, I only found it at the shop I bought it from.

It’s worth it even if you are not just into looks and designer labels. The interface is a haptic piece of design.
