AEN Website Planned for 2008 to 2009
It is time for a renovated AEN website to better showcase my work and capabilities. I have been thinking about it over the past year since I had the thought. This current site is doing a pretty good job for me to express my design philosophy in writing but not much emphasis is being placed on the portfolio. It has a bit of both and in my opinion, but does not do both very well.
I shall describe how I plan to carry out the revamp technically and creatively and what will happen in general to the website.
The new AEN website will place equal emphasis on both my work and writing and all kinds of content that will reside in the site, like news articles, sound, graphics, illustrations, music, text, advertisements, etc. If we group these kinds of information into three main types, we get Text, Images and Sound. Which like the web, are able to engage two of the human’s five senses. I intend the information architecture to engage these 2 senses. The other three senses are smell, taste and touch. We are not sure if we can taste or smell the web but we can definitely simulate touch.
Interaction by touch is already commonplace in today’s world. Touch screen phones and computing surfaces are perfect examples. Apple has really smart touch screen technologies that enable us to manipulate on screen objects in a way that mimic what we can do in real life, like pinching to zoom, swiping to navigate back and forth, and finger dragging to scroll. We are surely not far from interfaces that float in the air by holographic means and fully interact-able by all our senses.
Like how Kenya Hara has attempted to create and gather design that are haptic, I shall attempt to create an interface that responds more organically to mouse movements, free from the rigidness of the typical web interface. Words are what I can describe my concepts with for now. I will follow up with visuals as I progress.
Today’s web is all about clicking and dragging. What i intend to do is to create an interface controllable by for example movement, pauses, jerks and any motion a mouse cursor is capable of. This should result in a more organic interface that has more levels of interaction. Like I said I am going to group content into three broad types, i.e. text, images and sound. I will design the presentation of these information and also the relation between them.
As with all things new, one may not get used to it at first but my intention is not to create something people are already familiar with. It’s like introducing you a friend from another country. It should hopefully be good enough for you to explore and want to get to know it better.
Why make something that requires people to learn rather than what is tried and tested? I find it enriching to explore and discover, make mistakes and learn than to go with the flow. I am breaking rules taught in design schools and taking a more philosophical approach. I am getting rid of boxes, columns, grids and layout. These things do not exist in nature. No one arranged the rocks in the river, no one was up in the sky and laid out stars into patterns of constellations. I hope I can at least fulfill half of what I intend to do as it is no easy feat.
Feel free to give me suggestions while I get some visuals done for your eyes.
