Upgraded to WordPress 2.1
Following the recent release of WordPress 2.1 “Ella”, I have taken a few days to upgrade AEN DIRECT to the latest version of WordPress. I didn’t do it immediately due to plugin compatibility issues so I had to spend some time upgrading all my outdated plugins to their latest versions which work with WP2.1. For plugins that aren’t compatible with WP2.1, I had to look for alternatives and this also required a bit of theme modifications.
Some problems I ran into during the upgrade process:
- PHP Allowed Memory Size Exhausted Fatal Error
I did not disable all my plugins prior to the upgrade and this resulted in the plugins importing and exporting process to use up the 8MB memory limited assigned to PHP. Disabling the plugins did the trick. - The new Visual Editor not working due to tiny_mce_gzip.php not having sufficient memory
This error is similar to error no. 1 and I gave the script a temporary increase of memory allowance using the ini_set PHP function.
ini_set(”memory_limit”,”24M”); - Ajax Comments Bug
Although it is stated to work with WP2.1 in the plugin compatibility list, I’m having problems with the display of a comments after submission. When you submit a comment, it displays as an empty comment by “Anonymous”. Refreshing the page corrects the display. This bug is unresolved. I have posted a comment on the plugin author’s page so it should be fixed pretty soon.
Overall, “Ella” is definitely a kickass release of WordPress and I definitely recommend everyone to upgrade. My favourite feature is the new Visual Rich Text Editor. With the new tabbed Visual and Code View toggle, polishing code is now a quick process as you don’t have to wait for the old pop-up editor to load. It’s Ajax now. Inserting hyperlinks and images, uploading files, etc is also more efficient.
I have made the following changes to the blog due to change of plugins and theme modifications:
- New Archive Page
I have switch to the “Clean Archives Reloaded” plugin from the previous “Subtraction Styled Archives” plugin. - Subscribe to Comments plugin upgraded
I absolutely encourage you to use this feature if you wish to follow comments on my blog posts. You will be notified by email whenever there are new commments for the post.
That is all for this update!
Posting comment, please wait…

Hey DT, your theme is plugin-independant. You didn’t give me access to your plugins folder so nothing in that theme relies on plugins.

Ah sorry, I just needed to know about the theme! Thanks.

Hehe… was a bit hard to achieve some functionalities w/o the help of plugins, but then now no need to worry about upgrade and compatibility also a good thing.
My theme is very plugin dependant, a lot of theme modifications, so very headache during upgrade.

Hello
How did you resolve this problem with Ajax Comment? I had this even before WP 2.1 but I couldn’t find any solution….

Hi Lanooz, Have you tried WP 2.1.2. I’ve forgotten how I fixed the Ajax comments problem. Maybe you can tell me your problem in detail I’ll see if it rings a bell.

You can try deleting the cookies set from your site or logout and login again. Might be a cookie problem as I remember not doing much and the problem just disappeared.
